All-rounder Wiaan Mulder has been included in South Africa’s 15-man squad for next month’s World Test Championship final against Australia in England.
Mulder has played 18 Tests since debuting in 2019 – and predominantly batted at number seven in the order.
Prior to 2025, the highest he had batted in Test cricket was number six. In January’s second Test against Pakistan at Newlands, Mulder batted at number three.
“Wiaan batting at number three was not an experiment, I don’t think,” said Proteas head coach Shukri Conrad this week.
“He is technically sound enough to bat in that position. I know, not so long ago, I said Tristan Stubbs was perfect for number three, but it’s a work in progress.
“In this mulling head of mine, I’ve got a pretty good idea of what that’s going to look like. There are a few things to consider, so it might seem like I am uncertain. But I am very clear in my mind about how I want to go about it.”
All-rounder Corbin Bosch has also been named in South Africa’s squad for the WTC final. Bosch has played on Test. He took five wickets and scored 81 not out against Pakistan in Centurion earlier this year.
“What Corbin did against Pakistan made us realise he can provide good cover. He is not lacking for pace and he brings good balance to our side,” added Conrad.
The WTC final will start on 11 June.
