Western Province Over-40 lose again, qualify for 3rd-place and 5th-place play-offs

Lions Over-40 beat Western Province Over-40 by four wickets in Thursday’s rain-affected inter-provincial tournament fixture at Gelvandale Cricket Club in Port Elizabeth.

Western Province Over-40 posted a final total of 189 for seven in 37 overs. William Hantam and Jaco Castle hit 47 and 37, respectively. Shaan Hussain took three wickets.

Pursuing a revised target of 168, Lions Over-4o replied with 170 for six in 34 overs. Brandon Buckley and Zander de Bruyn hit 51 and 46, respectively. Shaamiel Bey and Devon Kriel took two wickets each.

Western Province Over-40, who are the reigning champions, won’t win the title again this year. They have qualified for the fifth-place play-off in the T20 leg of the tournament – and third-place play-off in the 45-over leg.

Easterns Over-40 beat Western Province Over-40 by six wickets at Despatch Cricket Club on Tuesday.

Western Province Over-40 posted a final total of 143 for six in 20 overs. Castle and Martin van der Merwe hit 35 and 21, respectively. Johan van Rooyen took two wickets.

Easterns Over-40 replied with 147 for four in 17.2 overs. Enock Makamo and Johan Fourie hit 54 and 22 not out, respectively. Castle took two wickets.

Veterans IPT

Western Province Over-40 v Boland Over-40.

Western Province Over-40 beat Boland Over-40 by 22 runs at Gelvandale Cricket Club on Monday, 19 May.

Western Province Over-40 posted a final total of 172 for four in 20 overs. Van der Merwe and Castle hit 77 not out and 60 not out, respectively. Dale Heramb and Reinhardt Strydom took one wicket each.

Boland Over-40 responded with 150 all out in 18.3 overs. Heramb and Strydom hit 28 and 21, respectively. Van der Merwe and Adi Jackson took three wickets each. Van der Merwe was named Player of the Match.

Earlier on Monday, Dolphins Over-40 beat Western Province Over-40 by five runs in a rain-affected T20 fixture at Heatherbank Cricket Club.

Western Province posted a final total of 173 for four in 20 overs. Hantam, Werner Moolman and Sohail Imran hit 47, 43 not out and 33 not out, respectively. Anthony Abiet took two wickets.

Dolphins Over-40 replied with 61 for two in seven overs. Stephan Joubert hit 29 not out. Imran and Jackson took one wicket each. Imran was named Player of the Match.

Western Province Over-40’s second T20 fixture on Monday will be against Boland Over-40 at Gelvandale Cricket Club.

Western Province Over-40 beat Border Over-40 by 72 runs at Despatch Cricket Club on Sunday, 18 May.

Western Province Over-40 posted a final total of 175 all out in 44 overs. Francois Vermaak and Andrew Sheel hit 44 and 33, respectively.

Border Over-40 replied with 103 all out in 27 overs. Craig Herman took four wickets. Castle and Devon Kriel took two wickets each. Herman was named Player of the Match.

Western Province Over-40 are the reigning over-40 IPT champions. They beat Easterns Over-40 in 2023’s final in Johannesburg.

Three members of the 2023 WP Over-40 squad – Jackson, Moolman and Castle – are in the 2025 squad. Moolman is the captain this year. Former Proteas captain Ashwell Prince captained WP Over-40 in 2023.
