Worcestershire fast bowler Josh Tongue will not join Kraaifontein Cricket Club for the remainder of 2022-23 Western Province Cricket Association premier league.

Tongue had been signed by Kraaifontein Cricket Club, via CPT Cricket Tours, in mid-December 2022.

However, he has since been included in the England Lions’ squad for this month’s tour of Sri Lanka.

“Although we are obviously disappointed that Josh isn’t coming out, we are incredibly happy for this Lions call-up, which comes at the perfect time for his career,” read a statement from CPT Cricket Tours.

“It says it all about the quality of bowler he is – getting the call- up as soon as he was deemed fit again. A Cape Town club will certainly remain a future option for Josh.

“We are gutted for Kraaifontein Cricket Club, as this is the second Lions call-up that affected them. A few seasons back, Ollie Robinson  – Kent wicketkeeper-batsman, not England all-rounder – was set to join them.”

Kraaifontein Cricket Club currently occupy 11th position in 2022-23’s 12-team WPCA premier league. They have won one and lost seven matches.

CPT Cricket Tours have other professional cricketers from abroad place at Cape Town-based clubs this season, including:

  • Harry Finch (Claremont Cricket Club)
  • Daniel Bell-Drummond (UWC Cricket Club)
  • Gareth Roderick (Green Point Cricket Club)
