Western Province batsman Zubayr Hamza has “put in a lot of work from a mental preparation standpoint” since being suspended from competitive cricket earlier this year.
Hamza’s nine-month suspension ended earlier this week. He returned to the Western Province XI for Friday’s 74-run victory over the Rocks in the One Day Cup.
“Having nine months off, it’s a lot of time to spend not just out of the game, but pretty much in isolation for large periods as well,” said Hamza.
“Having to go through those periods and come out refreshed, with a lot more energy, passion and hunger to succeed – those things have helped me in terms of what I want to achieve.
“What’s happened is in the past. I have put it behind me. I’ve had to allow myself to recuperate and go through the difficult times. I’m all the more better from a mental perspective, having gone through those difficult times in my career – and life.
“Understanding that I have gone through a tough period, I’ve asked myself the difficult questions – and answered. This has allowed me to prepare quite well for the opportunity to play again.”
Potential Proteas return for Hamza
Hamza has reiterated ambition to play for the Proteas again. He has been capped six times in Test cricket – and once in ODIs.
“Of course the goal would be to represent my country in any format again. Goals and plans should be set in the most simplest of ways,” added Hamza.
“The only way to get back into contention for any national team or higher honours would be through consistent performances or sheer weight of runs.
“There is the goal of representing my country again. Do I believe I am capable of this? Yes – definitely, without a doubt.
“Hopefully, I can earn that opportunity again sooner rather than later.”
