Rob Walter coaching career

Walter has been head coach of the Titans in South African domestic cricket. He has also coached Otago and Central Districts in New Zealand.

Rob Walter – Proteas

Walter was named ODI and T20I coach of the Proteas on 16 January 2023. His tenure started on 1 February 2023 and ended on 30 April 2025. He was at the Cricket World Cup in India with South Africa.

South Africa exited the tournament after semi-final defeat to Australia.

Rob Walter – Central Districts coach

Walter became head coach of the Central Districts in New Zealand domestic cricket in April 2021.

“I am very excited to have an opportunity now to work with a side as packed with talent as the Central Stags,” he said at the time.

“The Stags have had a number of recent successes and that has been down to the quality of the coaching of my predecessors. I am looking forward to continuing the team on that pathway and to developing future Black Caps for New Zealand.”

Rob Walter – Otago coach

Before coaching Central Districts, Walter was head coach of Otago in New Zealand for several seasons. He coached them from 2016 to 2021.

“I am grateful to Otago for the initial opportunity. I had a memorable and thoroughly enjoyable time with Otago as my first stop here in New Zealand,” said Walter when leaving Otago.

“Personally and professionally, it was time for me to move on.”

Walter was succeeded by former Zimbabwe batsman Dion Ebrahim at Otago.

Rob Walter – Titans coach

Walter was the head coach of the Titans in South Africa from 2013 to 2016.

Australia’s Craig McDermott and Zimbabwe’s Grant Flower were among the candidates, too, before Walter was preferred.

Walter relocated to New Zealand after leaving the Titans.

“The realisation that I will be ending my journey at the Titans is extremely sad because I have loved very moment of the journey,” Walter stated at the time.

“Yet, in the same breath, I am grateful that the Titans have allowed me to pursue another exciting opportunity in my coaching career.”

Rob Walter – previous work with the Proteas

Walter was the conditioning and fielding coach for the Proteas for several years before pursuing head coach positions in South Africa and New Zealand.

Walter has also worked with the Pune Warriors and Delhi Daredevils (now Delhi Capitals) in the Indian Premier League.
