The Western Province Cricket Association first division D match between Nyanga Cricket Club and Sherwood Manenberg Cricket Club will be restarted, at a different venue, after a robbery occurred – and gunshots were fired – during the initial fixture earlier this month.

Two strangers had walked onto the field during day one of the two-day game – and robbed some Sherwood Manenberg Cricket Club players. Bullets, too, were discharged.

“The matter was discussed at great length bcy the committee and the members would like to thank Nyanga Cricket Club on the steps they have taken with meeting with South African Police Service and the Community Police Forum following this incident,” read a statement from the WPCA local leagues committee.

“The matter has, however, been handed over to the senior leadership of WPCA, who have been given a deadline of 1 November 2015 to come up with a possible solution for safety measures at Nyanga Cricket Club.

“In the interim, all games scheduled to take place at Nyanga Cricket Club must be played away until after 1 November 2015, pending feedback from WPCA’s senior leadership.

“The committee also requests all clubs to be proactive in terms of security at their fields. The match will be restarted at a venue to be confirmed by the committee.”
