Captain Ashwell Prince praised Western Province Over-40 for this week’s title-winning campaign at the inter-provincial tournament in Johannesburg.
Western Province Over-40 beat Titans Over-40, Eastern Province Over-40 and Dolphins Over-40 to reach the final against East Rand Over-40.
After slipping to 15 for three, they recovered to 205 for seven on the back of half-centuries from the left-handed Ashley Fernandez and right-handed Jaco Castle.
Spinner Wayne Hendricks then took four wickets as East Rand Over-40 were limited to 151 all out.
“We probably were not tested as much as we could have been by the other teams going into this final. While those results were a bit more comfortable, we could see that today was going to be a real contest,” said Prince.
“It was evident from the very first ball this morning that East Rand Over-40 were going to fight hard.
“We asked people to stand up at different times. Overall, throughout the week, it has been a fantastic team effort from different individuals standing up.”
Left-arm seamer Luke Knipe and batsmen Duane Viljoen and Mark Ritchie were omitted from the Western Province Over-40 team for the final.
“It was tough for one or two guys to be left out the team here and not have the opportunity to play in the final, but it was a great team effort all around,” added Prince.
Lions Over-40 finished in third position and Eastern Province Over-40 fourth.
