Cricket South Africa announced the Proteas’ squad for the 2026 T20 World Cup in India and Sri Lanka this week.
Dolphins all-rounder Jason Smith, Western Province all-rounder George Linde and Lions fast bowler Kwena Maphaka have been included in the squad.
“We have had to make some big calls, but we feel this group is the strongest and has every chance of succeeding in India and Sri Lanka,” said CSA convenor selector Patrick Moroney.
These seven players were among those not included in South Africa’s 15-man squad for this year’s T20 World Cup squad.
1. Ryan Rickelton
“I’m at peace with whatever happens. I’m definitely not thinking about the T20 World Cup,” said Rickelton after scoring a century in the opening match of season four of the SA20.
2. Tristan Stubbs
South Africa selected fellow batsman Donovan Ferreira ahead of Stubbs. Batsman Matthew Breetzke also was not selected.
3. Rassie van der Dussen
South Africa selected fellow batsman Tony de Zorzi ahead of van der Dussen. Batsman Lhuan-dre Pretorius also was not selected.
4. Simon Harmer
“Harmer won’t be selected for the Proteas’ T20 World Cup team, but seriously, he’s making a valid white-ball statement if I’ve ever seen one,” said former South Africa fast bowler Dale Steyn recently.
5. Ottniel Baartman
Baartman was in South Africa’s squad for the 2024 T20 World Cup. He is currently the leading wicket-taker in season four of the SA20.
6. Reeza Hendricks
Hendricks is the third-highest run-scorer for South Africa in T20I cricket.
7. Bjorn Fortuin
South Africa effectively preferred all-rounder George Linde to fellow left-arm spinner Fortuin this time.
