Western Province have named a 14-man squad for Wednesday’s One-Day Cup fixture against the Warrios at St George’s Park in Port Elizabeth.
Claremont Cricket Club captain Josh Breed and batsman Beni Hansen have been included in the squad. Breed and Hansen have not yet been capped in the One-Day Cup.
Breed is a leg-spinning all-rounder – and has been among the leading wicket-takers and top run-scorers in the Western Province Cricket Association premier league for several seasons.
Breed recently took 12 wickets in one match for Western Province Colts against Warriors Colts. Hansen has captained South Africa Under-19.
Durbanville Cricket Club seamer Jody Lawrence has been retained. Green Point Cricket Club seamer Wesley Bedja and Primrose Cricket Club all-rounder Abdullah Bayoumy, who were in the WP squad previously, are not this time.
Western Province are without all-rounder George Linde, who has joined South Africa’s squad for the rest of the Champions Trophy.
Western Province are the reigning One-Day Cup, division one, champions. They currently occupy last position on this season’s points table, though.
“The team is disappointed after last week’s loss and all other matches we didn’t do well in,” said Western Province seamer Dane Paterson.
“We looked at the last four games as very important games, so we are a bit disappointed with our performances, but we’re looking forward to the next two.
“I think as a team we just need to bounce back and probably just do the basics well, do the basics for longer, and then just find ways on identifying where we can take wickets or where we can start scoring runs after building and absorbing pressure.
“Winning the game in PE will boost our confidence, we know we are playing on Wednesday, and we have another big one on Sunday against Boland, so will help us finish the campaign on a high.”
