The Atlantic Pirates signed former Proteas Women captain Mignon du Preez at the recent Women’s Cape Premier League player auction.
The Pirates paid 2.8 million CPL dollars – the tournament’s fictional currency – for du Preez. This amounted to almost half the Pirates’ budget of six million.
The Cape Vikings attempted to sign du Preez, but were outbid by the Pirates.
Du Preez played one Test, 153 ODIs and 114 T20Is from 2007 to 2022. She played for the Hobart Hurricanes during last year’s Women’s Big Bash League in Australia and, this year, represented Warriors Women in the FairBreak Invitational Tournament in Hong Kong.
Prior to the auction, the Pirates acquired quartet Corne Nortje, Nakeeta Collins, Wanda-Mari Ham and Kariena du Plessis.
The Cape Premier League has existed as a men’s tournament since 2019. The inaugural women’s CPL is scheduled to start in late September 2023.
