Proteas batsman Matthew Breetzke will play for Northamptonshire in this year’s T20 Blast in the United Kingdom.

Breetzke, who plays for the Warriors in South Africa, was the leading run-scorer in the season’s T20 Challenge.

Breetzke played for Durban’s Super Giants in the SA20 earlier this year.

“Matt is a very capable batter who will bring power, experience and some real determination to the side,” said Northamptonshire head coach John Sadler.

“We identified what we wanted to achieve with our overseas signings this year and he fits the profile of exactly the type of player that we wanted to bring in as our second overseas.

“He has been excellent over the last couple of seasons domestically and we’ve been really impressive so we can’t wait to see him this summer.”

Breetzke, who has been capped three times in T20I cricket, was not included in the Proteas’ squad for next month’s T20 World Cup in the United States of America and Caribbean.

“I am very excited to join the Steelbacks for the upcoming Blast and really grateful for the opportunity. I hope to contribute a lot on and off the field during my time at the club,” added Breetzke.
