Club cricket player transfers ahead of the 2023-24 Western Province Cricket Association season are projected to increase by 40 percent since 2022-23.

Club Cricket SA recorded 30-plus formal premier league and first division player transfers ahead of the 2022-23 WPCA season.

Almost 30 confirmed transfers for the 2023-24 season were on record as of 1 August – and several more anticipated this month.

Based on averages collated over three seasons, the number is projected to grow to approximately 50 by early October, when the 2023-24 season will be underway – and the transfer deadline effectively over.

All-rounder Morne Pentz’s move from Northerns Goodwood Cricket Club in the WPCA first division A to Rondebosch Cricket Club in the premier league is among the highest-profile 2023-24 transfers.

“It was a great journey at Northerns Goodwood. I hope everybody can support me as I continue my journey at Rondebosch,” said Pentz.

Northerns Goodwood Cricket Club, meanwhile, have gained all-rounder Reeve Cyster from Tygerberg Cricket Club.

“Personally, I needed the change from the club, but loved my time spent with Tygerberg Cricket Club,” said Cyster.

Also in the first division A, Brackenfell Cricket Club have regained batsman Rushdi Jappie, but lost seamer Brandon Viret and all-rounder Philip Kleynhans to Bellville Cricket Club in the premier league.

“I wish Rylands well in the WPCA premier league. They have the individual and collective ability to do well in that league. I’m now looking forward to joining Brackenfell in an attempt to lift them back into the premier league,” said Jappie.

Kleynhans said: “I enjoyed my season at Brackenfell and unfortunately things did not go our way. I’m looking forward to this new chapter, during which I want to add value to my new club.”

Pinelands Cricket Club, Blue Bells Cricket Club and Cravenby Cricket Club – across the first division A, B and C, respectively – have evidently been among the busiest recruiters, too.
