The uncapped Asakhe Tsaka has been named in Western Province’s squad for this week’s 4-Day Domestic Series fixture against the Titans at Newlands in Cape Town.

Tsaka played for South Africa Under-19 in 2021 and, more recently, has been representing the University of the Western Cape Cricket Club in the Western Province Cricket Association premier league.

Western Province will be without all-rounder Mihlali Mpongwana, seamer Dane Paterson and batsmen David Bedingham and Tony de Zorzi for this fixture. They are with South Africa A for the ongoing series against West Indies A.

“We’ve lost key players to the SA A side, but we spoke about it at training – that this opens up opportunities for other players to showcase their talent,” said Western Province all-rounder Kyle Simmonds.

“It takes more than 11 players to get through a season, so this is part of how things go. As a team, we are happy for the guys who have been called up that’s one of the reasons why we play the game is because players get rewarded for good performances.”

Western Province currently occupy sixth position in this season’s 4-Day Domestic Series, division one, standings. They lost to the Lions before drawing with the Tuskers.

“The team is in a good space – we’ve had some time off from our last game and I think is sometimes important to get away from the game when you can,” added Simmonds.

“There has been a focus on switching on and making sure our intensity and focus is where it needs to be.”
